Social issues are important. I can't stress this enough because I am constantly horrified to realize there are people who are so ready to dismiss the fact there is injustice involving women, people of color, people in the LGBTQ community, people who are overweight or elderly and people who are disabled.
It hurts me to see people I love face these injustices. It hurts me more to see other people dismiss their pain, or worse justify it. These issues are personal for me. They are emotional. I think they should be because we can do so much better than that by each other.
These issues strike another chord as well. These issues were developed by society and social constructs have everything to do with the way we interact with each other. I chose this specialty for a reason; I care about the harmony among people. That harmony is so dependent on the way we interact and community but if we can learn the tools we need to have healthy interactions, it sets up society for generations to come.
I am not perfect when it comes to these issues. I have a limited understanding due to my place in society. But over the next month or so I will do my best to post about how you can educate yourself about these things so that we can all be on the same page in regards to how we can eradicate these problems.
My information will be a mix of research and friends and family who face these problems on a more intimate level than I do. So stay tuned!
