I want to take a moment to talk about weight loss. It is one of the most common things people seek out a hypnotherapist for. It is the top New Years resolution. It is a huge topic of debate and discussion as it relates to social movements and the media. I want to talk about my personal views on weight loss. How I treat my weight loss clients. And how hypnosis in general can help you achieve that goal.
1. How to turn weight loss into weight management.
Words are incredibly important in hypnotherapy. Its how we connect our desires to our brains and, from there, to our bodies. Hypnosis is about understanding associations and we have a strong association to the word "loss". When we lose our keys, we want to find them. When we lose our phone, we frantically search until it reappears. That is why your hypnotherapist should not use the word loss. Instead, the proper terminology is weight management. This seems small, but its incredibly important. It can make the difference between keeping the weight off, or finding that lost weight all over again.
2. It all starts with body positivity.
Body positivity is a social justice movement that I feel very strongly about. The ideals of this movement are loving the skin you're in, equality for people of all body types, and an end to body shaming. I highly encourage you to educate yourselves about this movement because it is truly beautiful and very much needed. Health awareness is not an intrinsic part of the movement, but I believe that learning how to manage your health begins with being body positive. It teaches you to love the process. To achieve this, we work with issues with self image (as needed) in session.
3. How to optimize hypnotherapy for maximum results.
Depending on the range of desired weight management, your hypnotherapist may request you meet with a nutritionists and have a doctors referral. The rule of thumb is if you want to lose more than 30 pounds, you will probably need a referral of some sort. However, everyone has different body types, so this rule really does vary. Hypnosis is a great tool to curb food cravings, increase desire for healthy foods, increase motivation for exercise, while facing your associations with weight, health and self image.
That about sums it up. If you have any questions or comments, I would love to hear from you. I hope everyone has a happy, safe New Years celebration!!
