Life has been hectic. In addition to the normal details of day to day life, I've had out of town guests, I've moved, and I've had more social obligations than I've been used to. Its a good time of life, and full of changes, but its also a stressful time. To add to this list, my child has also decided to stop sleeping and anyone who knows me knows that I do not function very well without sleep.
I believe that you learn lessons when you most need them and recently I was able to learn something that has come to help me in more ways than I could imagine. I had a friend pass away from epilepsy almost four months ago. It has been very difficult on everyone, so the woman who acted as her second mother put together a healing ritual for several people. She brought in someone to teach us kundalini yoga. This practice of yoga is taught with the intent of healing, self awareness, and nurturing the spirit. The thing that I found most interesting about this was the breathing exercises. I've been applying them to my day to day life and it has helped me relieve stress on the spot.
It takes about five minutes. You begin with sitting still, calming your mind and focusing on your breath. Breathe deeply through your nose and pull the air into your diaphragm. Imagine your entire body expanding and hold the breathe. Sip in a little more air, and hold the breathe. Sip in a little more air and hold the breathe. Then release it through your mouth in a powerful exhale. Doing a few repetitions of this exercise has helped me re-energize myself, let go of stress and be more present in the moment.
It's important, especially in stressful situations, to be sure our basic needs are being met. It is also important to have a self-care regime. For my mom, this includes exercising. For my older sister, it's playing the guitar. For me, during the busiest of days, its remembering to breathe with purpose. Doing something, with the intention of self love will work wonders for your health, lifestyle and overall satisfaction. It takes much less energy to give what overflows from your cup rather than spreading yourself too thin by giving away the little your cup has. So keep your energies up! Do something for you! And conquer great things today!
